The "Invasion" of scarecrows is a month long, from mid September to mid October each year. It is estimated that approximately 2,000 visitors come to Meaford 'just to see' the scarecrows and approximately 10,000 people altogether enjoy the event.

“The Meaford Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival is a unique annual, volunteer-driven community event. It begins with an ‘Invasion’ of scarecrows from mid September to mid October, a time when the downtown streets are laden with bushy cornstalks, bright orange bows, and, of course, scarecrows – hand-stuffed by community volunteers. Business windows and storefronts throughout the municipality are also proudly decked out in their scarecrow and harvest finery.

The Big Fall Weekend, always the weekend before Thanksgiving, is then kicked off on Friday with a scarecrow parade on the main street (Sykes), followed by a free family festival at Meaford’s exquisite harbour. The entire event draws thousands to the area each year, and is not to be missed!

As ‘Head Scarecrow’, my straw-filled heart bursts with pride when I talk about Meaford, its wonderful people, tremendous natural beauty, great community spirit and outstanding events and attractions. Come to visit. Come to live. Open a business. Just come!” (Marilyn Morris, Organizer and Head Scarecrow of the Scarecrow Invasion)
