Message From the Mayor

Clumpus portrait

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Municipality of Meaford. We are nestled in the shadow of the Niagara Escarpment, at the southern tip of Georgian Bay. A rural community of unique agricultural achievement, arts and cultural accomplishments, and recreational delights. We also boast the prettiest harbour in the area which attracts boaters, fishers and sunset gazers alike.

We celebrate our history here. The charming Leith Church cemetery is the final resting place for Tom Thomson. Trout Hollow was once home to John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. The book by Margaret Marshall Saunders of Beautiful Joe, the mistreated dog, is still celebrated where the story began in Beautiful Joe Park. A heritage ambiance is prevalent through both the picturesque small urban centre of Meaford, and the well-preserved Victorian architecture of homes and farms. Our iconic, beautifully restored and accessible Meaford Hall and Opera House is home to art galleries, amateur theatre, professional entertainments, and cultural and community activities. Eclectic music festivals, Canada Day celebrations, and fall fairs abound in the summer. The highly successful Meaford International Film Festival occurs annually on Labour Day weekend. Our celebrated Scarecrow Invasion leads up to a family festival. That event and the Apple Harvest Craft Show welcome visitors annually the weekend before Thanksgiving. However, even with one foot in the past, our sights are firmly focused on the future.

With an emphasis on the environment, we have one of, if not the highest waste diversion rate in the province. We encourage new business development through the Chamber of Commerce produced “made in Meaford” version of Dragon’s Den. Parks, trails and beaches; a hospital and great schools; farmers’ markets, local food, restaurants and shopping initiatives; ecological home builders; these all contribute to a healthy, comfortable lifestyle for all ages. I am so excited about the opportunities for investment and growth here. I welcome you to visit our vibrant municipality with a warm, friendly, small town Ontario feel. I know, because it happened to me, that you will fall in love all over again.

FREE Lead testing for your water! The Municipality of Meaford is seeking residents connected to the Municipal drinking water system to participate in regulated Lead Sampling anytime from now until April 13, 2017. In 2007, the Ministry of the Environment made changes to the regulation regarding sampling and testing of Lead in Private and Commercial buildings. The Municipality is required to complete this sampling as part of these Regulations. If you own a property built before 1952 that could have lead plumbing, or buildings built before 1990 that has brass fittings that could contain lead, or lead solder, we would like to hear from you! The testing will require access to your kitchen sink and will take up to 45 minutes to complete. Testing is FREE and results will be shared with you. Please contact ehoward@meaford.ca if you would like to participate.
